It occurred to me that i haven't actually written up the decklist yet on this blog. Here's the incarnation that i took to FNM this week and went 1-3 with.
20x Swamp
3x Tectonic Edge
1 Inquisition of Kozilek
1x Mind Sludge
2x Crystal Ball
2x Brittle Effigy
2x Consuming Vapors
2x Haunting Echoes
2x Grave Titan
4x Gatekeeper of Malakir
4x Corrupt
4x Nantuko Shade
4x Sign in Blood
4x Duress
Sideboard
2x Malakir Bloodwitch
2x Sword of Vengeance
3x Vampire Hexmage
3x Marsh Casualties
2x Leyline of the Void
3x Marsh Casualties
It definitely needs updating for the post-Scars meta game but i have a few tweaks in mind already. More hand disruption in the shape of Memoricide seems like a no-brainer (I wonder how many times i'll say "...naming Primeval Titan" at the next FNM). I picked up one Consume the Meek but i don't know how many to run exactly. They're going to replace Marsh Casualties in the sideboard, so maybe just swap them 3-for-3? I'm also umming and aahing over Skithiryx but i'm not sure how good a single infect card is on its own, although its other stats might be good enough to pull it through anyway. 4/4 regenerating flier with the possibility of haste that also puts your opponent on a 3-turn clock by itself? Seems okay, but for 5 (or 6 mana), a three turn clock isn't THAT exciting. Plus i only have one copy and the price keeps going up, so maybe not ;D
Cards I don't like: Nantuko Shade seems bad as a four-of (personally I'd run < 1). I'm also not a massive fan of Crystal Ball in this deck, or Haunting Echoes, they don't really do anything. Corrupt is nice, but I think you should be running 4 Doom Blade before adding the first Corrupt.
ReplyDeleteVampire Hexmage is good enough at the moment that I'd make sure you have access to 4 and run at least some main deck. I'd also look at using Abyssal Persecutor as finisher of choice.
Having said that I would cut Corrupts and accepting that Mind Sludge isn't that much better than Mind Rot at the moment, is it worth considering a blue splash? Creeping Tar Pit is a fantastic land against control decks to attack planeswalkers. You also get access to Trinket Mage to fetch Brittle Effigy and could replace the sideboard Leyline with Nihil Spellbomb. You then also have access to some counter magic and Into the Roil to help out with problem permanents like Mimic Vat.
Speaking of which, I would really like to run the Vat in a deck with as much removal as this. Doom Blade your Titan, imprint on my Vat is a pretty sweet play.
Hope these suggestions are interesting!

I really love Haunting Echoes with the amount of hand disruption i have, but when i pick up my Memoricides i guess HE becomes kinda redundant.
ReplyDeleteDoom Blade is already a 4-of, which i somehow skipped over while writing this list o_O oops!
I can probably cut a couple of corrupts to make way for a blue splash, which i had already considered anyway (the thing that put me off is playing blue without Jace seems 'meh').
Vat is definitely something to consider though, might have to try and trade for some. As for persecutor, i have a single copy but it seems pretty tough to get rid of in mono black. People on the MTGS forums have said the same thing.
Thanks for the tips though, definitely some to consider.
